IV Sedation Instructions

How to prepare so you can relax completely and safely.

Preparing for IV sedation

True IV sedation lets you sleep comfortably through treatment. Because it’s a deeper level of relaxation, a little preparation keeps you safe. These are general guidelines — follow the specific instructions our team gives you.

Before your appointment

  • Arrange a driver. You must have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you afterward. You may not drive for the rest of the day.
  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before your appointment (small sips of water with essential medication are OK if approved by our team).
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing with short sleeves, and remove nail polish if asked.
  • Tell us about all medications, supplements, and any changes to your health before the day.

After sedation

  • Rest for the remainder of the day; avoid work, exercise, alcohol, and important decisions.
  • Start with clear fluids, then light foods as you feel ready.
  • Take medications exactly as prescribed.

These are general guidelines; our team will confirm your exact pre-op instructions before your appointment.
