**For a patient who genuinely cannot tolerate dental treatment while awake, sedation isn’t a luxury — it’s often the only way needed care actually happens.** If you’re a parent or caregiver who has been turned away, rushed, or told to “try again another day,” this guide is for you. ## When “just be brave” isn’t an option

Some patients — those with autism, intellectual or developmental disabilities, movement disorders, severe dental phobia, or sensory sensitivities — can’t safely sit through an exam, let alone a filling or extraction. That’s not a behavior problem to be corrected in the chair; it’s a real barrier. Trying to force treatment awake tends to make the next visit harder and can be genuinely unsafe.
